Valerie is an accomplished vocalist, influenced by Diana Krall, Nancy Wilson, Shirley Horn, Carmen McRae, and Diane Shuur. A multi talented musician, she also plays soprano, alto, tenor and baritone sax, flute, piccolo and clarinet; all extremely well. Ms. Gillespie has played with national icons Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Rosemary Clooney, George Burns, Ben Vereen, Joan Rivers, Ray Charles, Jon Faddis, Steve Allen, Anthony Newley, Natalie Cole & Michael Feinstein. She traveled with the Xavier Cugat Orchestra in the US and Japan. She also performs with the Florida Orchestra and with big band orchestras at Ruth Eckert Hall and the Van Wezel PAC. 21st Annual Giving Hunger the Blues & Jazz on the Bay

Welcome to Giving Hunger The Blues, Sarasota's Preeminent Music Festival. Starting at 12:00 PM (with gates opening at 11:30 so you can grab your spot on the bay) and going through 9:30 PM, rain or shine. Giving Hunger the Blues is proud to present a full day of local, regional and national music on two stages and a selection of the area's most delicious restaurants and food vendors and retail businesses.

LIVE MUSIC is always the main attraction at Giving Hunger the Blues, which always brings phenomenal talent to please the always happy crowd. Previous artists over the years include names such as AC/DC's Brian Johnson, The Allman Brothers Band's Dan Toler, and Rick Derringer, just to name a few.

Our mission is to feed, protect and nurture the kids in our community by providing meals to families in need, especially during the holiday season. Established by the Generoso Foundation in 1996, Giving Hunger the Blues has generated more than $1.6 million with all proceeds of this year’s event going to the Mayors’ Feed the Hungry Program and the Generoso Foundation.

VIP Tickets: $75.00 ($65 for Sarasota Jazz Club members)

The VIP package includes exclusive VIP seating areas for both the Blues and Jazz stages including comfortable “chill lounge” seating. VIP’s will also receive special wristbands for 4 VIP beverages (wine, beer and/or specialty GHTB cocktails from our VIP specialty cocktail menu) and a served dinner catered by renowned Mattison’s catering.

Jazz at Two - Jazz Jam w/ Al Hixon Trio

Jazz at Two gets off to a rousing start with a swingin' jazz jam to kick off the Jazz at Two Series. Special thanks to Al Hixon for helping the Jazz Club set up this special opening to this season's Jazz at Two. Al brings his Monday Jazz Jam trio regulars, John Lamb and Billy Marcus for this performance. A number of area musicians and vocalists have been invited to sit in at this closed jam session.

Entertaining will be a trio from State College of Florida with performances by some of the recipients of the scholarships. The event is free and open to the public. Special WEDNESDAY Jazz at Two with Bruce Wallace, bass; Marty Morell, vibes; Richard "Stretch" Bruyn, piano; Dave Morgan, drums. Concert will feature a tribute by Marty Morell, a member of the Bill Evans Trio for seven years, to vibist Milt Jackson.


Evening Concert - Chuck Redd and La Lucha Trio

World renowned percussionist Chuck Redd and La Lucha Trio in concert. Chuck Redd has made 25 world tours and toured Japan 6 times performing with the top jazz artists. Tampa area based trio, La Lucha has performed in Spain and Italy and have been named the top jazz ensemble in the Tampa Bay area 4 consecutive years. Trio features John O'Leary, piano, Alejandro Arenas, bass and Mark Feinman, drums. Dick Hyman has chosen Mark Feinman as drummer for his Jazz All-Star bands at the last two Sarasota Jazz Festivals.

Joy of Jazz - Jim Wellen Quintet

Joy of Jazz with the Jim Wellen Quintet features Billy Marcus, keys; Dick Hamilton, trombone; John Lamb, bass; Al Hixon, drums and Jim Wellen on tenor sax. Concert will feature some classic jazz standards and music from the American songbook.

Dick Hyman with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, featuring John Sheridan, Allan Vache, Phil Flanagan, Mike Pittsley, Kevin Hess and Jim Cullum. This ensemble is renowned worldwide for playing the classic jazz associated with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Bix Beiderbecke --among others--plus music by great American composers such as Duke Ellington, Hoagy Carmichael, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin and was featured nationally on the weekly public radio series, Riverwalk Jazz.
